What is Orton- Gillingham? Learn about why Kate is re-training with The Apple Group for two years!

Orton-Gillingham (OG) is a highly structured approach that breaks reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time. It was the first approach to use explicit, direct, sequential, systematic, multi-sensory instruction to teach reading, which is not only effective for all students but essential for teaching students with dyslexia. This is the foundational teaching dyslexic students need for decoding and spelling as well as fluency training, exposure to literature and vocabulary instruction.

Barton, Wilson, and Slingerland are all Orton-Gillingham based methods. While Kate is trained in Orton- Gillingham by IMSE, she uses other OG based programs that deliver multi-sensory instruction and results with the goal of lesson plans for each individual student to be of the highest level of engagement. At the recent AET conference, she learned about an Orton-Gillingham program called CONNECTIONS: OGin3D® created by The Apple Group https://applegroupdyslexia.com/. Kate was amazed with their method and they are also IDA accredited: https://dyslexiaida.org/accredited-teaching-training-programs/. The greatest illuminating realization is the way in which physical objects are used in their method impact memory. If you would like to read published research on their program, please visit their website.

Kate is also currently re-training to become a Certified Dyslexia Therapist, CDT in Orton-Gillingham with The APPLE Group, . This is a two year commitment, and why pursue this when she is doing this and already has the knowledge and is a Professional Educational Therapist (https://www.aetonline.org/index.php/et-professional-membership)? Because there is always NEW information that we are learning about The Science of Reading. NOLA Learning Support and Consulting wants to offer the best possible support to our students.

The minimum requirement for OG instruction is two hours per week in order to make measurable progress. In order to try to help more of our students, Kate will be offering more sessions including 30 minute sessions at $65.00

This will include now Saturdays. For scheduling, please go to our website and book! If a time does not work for you on the schedule, please do not hesitate to ask us about other times.
