This summer, we are excited to offer a middle school Zoom book club centered around Gone to Drift by Diana McCaulay.
This powerful novel follows Lloyd, a boy searching for his grandfather, a fisherman lost at sea, while uncovering deeper questions about family, responsibility, and the environment. Set in Jamaica, the story offers students a rich sense of place and meaningful themes to explore together.
This group is also designed to bring Jamaican and American students together, creating an opportunity to connect across cultures through shared reading and discussion. Students will gain new perspectives while recognizing common experiences around family, community, and growing up.
Sessions are guided and interactive, supporting comprehension, vocabulary, and thoughtful discussion in a small-group setting.
We also hope to welcome Diana McCaulay for a live Q&A, giving students the chance to connect directly with the author.

The idea behind the summer book club sounded relaxing and refreshing, especially the focus on slowing down and enjoying meaningful discussions. It reminded me of joining a reading group during a busy semester just to take a break from constant deadlines. Around that same time, I even searched for an online course help service because balancing coursework and personal time became difficult. Activities like this really show how reading can create a sense of connection and calm.
