SUMMER SERVICES

At NOLA Learning Support, our summer services are designed to give students the time and targeted instruction they need to make meaningful progress in reading and writing. Summer is an ideal opportunity to slow down, fill in foundational gaps, and build confidence without the pressure of the school year. We work with students who may be struggling with decoding, fluency, comprehension, spelling, or written expression, providing individualized, research-based intervention tailored to each learner.

How We Begin

We begin every summer program with a combination of formal and informal assessments. This allows us to clearly identify each student’s strengths and areas of need across key literacy skills.

Using tools such as:

  • phonics inventories

  • spelling assessments

  • oral reading fluency measures

  • comprehension and vocabulary assessments

We develop a focused, responsive intervention plan. Our goal is not only to improve skills, but to help students understand how they learn best—so they become more independent and confident learners.

Support for Older Students

For middle and high school students, we offer targeted support for summer reading and writing assignments, along with explicit writing intervention. Our instruction is grounded in Diana Hanbury King’s Writing Skills program, a structured, step-by-step approach that helps students:

  • organize their ideas

  • write clear, complete sentences

  • build cohesive paragraphs and essays

This approach is especially helpful for students who feel stuck when writing, as it provides clear frameworks, modeling, and guided practice.

Summer Book Clubs

We also offer small-group summer book clubs designed to build:

  • reading stamina

  • comprehension

  • confidence in discussion

These groups create a supportive space for students to engage in meaningful conversations, make connections across texts, and develop a deeper connection to reading. Whenever possible, we bring together students from different backgrounds, creating opportunities for connection, perspective-taking, and shared learning.

Our Goal

Throughout the summer, sessions are individualized, supportive, and intentionally paced.

Whether a student needs to build foundational reading skills or refine higher-level writing, our goal is simple:
to help each student return to school stronger, more capable, and more confident.
