What is the most effective way to teach reading?

Have you heard about the Reading Wars? It is a decades old debate over how children should be taught to read. In my early days of private practice, I remember teachers who challenged my belief in teaching explict phonics to my students and feeling outraged! Fortunately,in 2000, a National Panel determined what the most effective reading instruction is. They recommended explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, systematic phonics instruction, methods to improve fluency, and ways to improve reading comprehension. In this video, learn what the science says about how children should be taught to read.
