In my early days of private practice, I remember teachers who challenged my belief in teaching explict phonics to my students and feeling outraged! Fortunately,in 2000, a National Panel determined what the most effective reading instruction is. They recommended explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, systematic phonics instruction, methods to improve fluency, and ways to improve reading comprehension.
